The Southland Chamber of Commerce and the Otago Southland Employer’s Association celebrated the official opening of the new offices at 150 Tay Street Invercargill last night. Over 90 guests attended the opening and included members of both organisations.
For the Chamber of Commerce the new location has meant that the organisation will achieve greater brand visibility and access for members, with the goal of reducing the organisation’s footprint and overheads, which will in turn add greater value for chamber members. Furthermore, Sarah Hannan Chief Executive for the Chamber of Commerce states that “the biggest driver for the move however was the opportunity to collaborate with SIT in fostering innovation here in Southland. A stronger and more diverse regional economy is imperative if we are to compete internationally.” The partnership will focus efforts on building, attracting and retaining skills in the region and fostering a community that encourages and entices innovators and entrepeneurs to live and work in Southland.
The guest speaker for the evening, Lindah Lepou, is an internationally recognised Pacific Couture fashion designer who has recently moved to the region. Working with natural fibres using traditional materials in contemporary ways, Lindah’s career as a fashion designer has spanned over two decades. More recently, Lindah has received an official invitation from the World Fashion Organisation to represent New Zealand in their inaugural World Fashion Exhibition during Paris Fashion Week this year, as an introduction to her own show at Paris Fashion Week 2015. This international platform is said to provide Lindah with a valuable opportunity to not only expand her own creative and business ventures, but also enables her to promote a broader picture of what makes New Zealand special in its own cultural and creative diversity.
At the conclusion of Lindah’s presentation, some of her recent works were shown, including the recent design of the new SIT graduation gowns.
