Young dragons fired up

The Southland Times

Fermented seaweed and dandelions in a jar aren’t the usual bits and pieces you pick up from The Warehouse, but they were all on sale yesterday at the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Trade Day.

Southland Chamber of Commerce Young Enterprise regional co-ordinator Joanne O’Connor said the Trade Day represented six months of research and development work by the students.

Extra-long T-shirts, tailormade chocolate packaging, heated windscreen scrapers, cookbooks for flatters and eco-friendly cleaning products were just some of the products on display from teams at Southland schools.

Aparima College’s Effulgent managing director Jessica Black, had to convince her dad to let the company ferment seaweed in his shed, while in-school rival company Le Beaute uses nothing but environmentally friendly packaging in its product, Green Cleen, operation director Latisha Kerslake said.

The teams were all competing against each other, with the winning Southland team going on to compete at a national level in December, O’Connor said.
